Bay Area Girls Rock Camp is a nonprofit organization that empowers girls through music, promoting an environment that fosters self-confidence, creativity and teamwork.  BAGRC challenges gender stereotypes, encourages collaboration and tolerance among peers, and provides a comfortable space for people of all backgrounds to express themselves.  Through music lessons, workshops, group activities and performance, girls acquire skills that help guide them throughout their lives.

The Arts and Expression department at Youth UpRising is committed to chronicling youth views and experiences about an array of emerging social issues. As Youth UpRising's President and CEO, Olis Simmons, said this week, “we’re thrilled to bring the extraordinary talent of our East Oakland youth to the attention of First Friday attendees in an effort to bridge these unique worlds.”

 

Films include music videos, narrative, experimental, and PSAs.

This month's FFS highlights short films by local women filmmakers, curated by Bay Area Women in Film and Media.  The showcase features documentary, narrative, and experimental films touching on a range of subjects, including online dating, black urban farmers, women and prison, motorbikes, family memories, and more!

The films will screen from 6:00-7:45pm, with a Q&A at the end.  Come see some terrific films and support local women filmmakers!


Bay Area Women in Film and Media (BAWIFM) helps women media-makers connect, create and be inspired.  They offer creative and professional support to our members through monthly meetings, special events and a very active on-line community: http://www.bawifm.org

This month FFS features highlights and winning films from Bay Area Youth Media Network's recent festival!  Includes documentaries about language preservation and street art, PSAs about gender equality and transphobia, a stop-motion animated short about cupcakes in love, a short noir about a mysterious ball, and more.  All made by youth filmmakers!


Bay Area Youth Media Network is a consortium of nonprofit organizations that believe in the power of media (film, music, radio, photography, web and technology) as a means to engage youth voice, self-expression and empowerment and to inspire social change (baymn.org).

This month, FFS is showcasing some terrific short films from TILT, the youth program of the Ninth Street Independent Film Center.  Big than you to Robyn Bykofsky who has curated the selection.  The playlist includes narrative, documentary, and experimental films on themes ranging from playful to poignant.  Some of the filmmakers will be present, so come out and support young artists at The New Parkway!
